The Parades Commission has considered the forthcoming Belfast Pride parade, set to take place on Saturday, August 1st.

The Commission met with the parade organizer and received representations from some people opposed to the parade. The Commission heard assurances from the Pride Committee in regard to the conduct of the parade and has subsequently decided not to place any restrictions on the parade.

Speaking after the meeting Parades Commission Chairman Rena Shepherd said:

“We respect the views of those who are organizing the Pride parade and those who wish to express their opposition. Just as with any other parade where there is disagreement the Commission believes it is paramount that all concerned treat each other with respect and show tolerance towards the views of wider society. We welcome the assurances we have received in regard to the stewarding of the parade and the general conduct of the participants.

“It is very clear to us that the Belfast Pride parade is a welcome addition to the city and it is a colourful and positive celebration of all lifestyles which co-exist in Belfast. The Parades Commission is confident that this event can be a positive experience for Belfast.”
