Sainsbury’s, which opens the doors of its west Belfast store this summer, has today announced that the 250 people currently working in Curley’s will be offered employment with at least an extra 100 people recruited in weeks and months ahead.

The retailer  has advertised the posts locally and through its own website, and manager Sean Largey is expecting a big response from local job hunters:

“We have more than 100 new jobs to fill in our Andersonstown store in light of the fact that we are offering all existing Curley’s staff the opportunity to transfer to Sainsbury’s. The Sainsbury’s store in Andersonstown will be the biggest in Northern Ireland and in total we will have 350 colleagues employed on site. We will be hiring new colleagues for every part of the store including checkout, shop floor and supervisory positions.

“We have just launched a recruitment campaign and I am confident that we will receive a very positive response. This is an exciting time to be planning a store opening and we intend to put a store into west Belfast which will meet and exceed the expectations of our customers. That means matching our quality products with colleagues that are absolutely committed to meeting the needs of our customers.”

David Davidson, Regional Operations Manager for Sainsbury’s in Northern Ireland said: “This jobs announcement is a welcome boost for the local economy in west Belfast and the surrounding area. Sainsbury’s is very excited at the prospect of opening our west Belfast store and in the current economic climate I know that the additional jobs take on an extra significance. It was also important to us that none of the staff from the former Curley’s supermarket lost their jobs as a result of the change and we immediately offered them the opportunity to take up positions with Sainsbury’s before beginning this recruitment process.”

Sainsbury’s in Andersonstown will the supermarket chain’s 11th store in Northern Ireland and the company currently employs 2,600 people across its 10 other local stores.
