150,000sq ft of new retail and restaurant space with an additional 600 space multi storey car park at the site of The Quays Shopping Centre in Newry looks set to receive the go ahead from planners. Subject to final approval the new £35 million phase at the complex will be situated on the existing site at the centre and will be linked to the present mall via a glass covered bridge.

The exciting new development will provide a much needed boost to the local construction sector and will create a new street scape and grand plaza feel to one of Northern Ireland premier shopping destinations.

Dr Gerard O’Hare, owner of The Quays stated, “I am delighted that the application is to be recommended for approval by the Department. This will allow The Quays to offer a further new and exciting phase to its customers.

“In the present market conditions it is not easy to plan new projects but we believe that good sound development is more important than ever now. It offers opportunity to create much needed jobs in construction and retail and this project demonstrates that both The Quays and Newry remain at the premiership level of retail demand.

“This development has much wider implications as it secures the vitality of a city centre; it offers sustainability to existing retailers with the introduction of a wider critical mass and it offers hope for many in wider society- that there is a light at the end of the current, dark economic tunnel.”

Dr O’Hare added “Of course it will remain difficult to deliver these plans in current market conditions and impossible without certainty of demand but I am delighted to announce that with half of the space already reserved we have very good reason to be optimistic. My team has done an amazing job bringing this project forward in challenging times which should not be underestimated and I am confident that they have the skills and experience to allow them to continue with this success through to delivery.”

The new phase subject to final approval is expected to commence in the latter half of 2012 with completion late 2013.It is expected that the project will create in the region of 200 jobs during construction and 300 full and part time retail and associated jobs on completion.

•	Stores in Northern Ireland to trial unique Brand Match initiative from 17th August
•	Market-leading technology guarantees price match with Asda and Tesco on thousands of branded groceries by offering coupons at the till, there and then for use at their next shop. We even include deals!
•	There are just three simple steps: 1. The customer does the shopping; 2. Sainsbury’s innovative system does the maths; 3. When the branded grocery basket is cheaper at Tesco or Asda, the customer immediately gets the price difference as a coupon against their next shop
•	Sainsbury’s Brand Match promise means it will match Tesco and Asda on over 12,000 branded grocery lines*

Sainsbury’s has had a longstanding commitment to ensure it offers customers great value on grocery brands and has today (Tuesday 16th August) announced the trial launch of cutting-edge technology in its 12 Northern Irish stores** that will guarantee that customers will not pay more for their basket of branded groceries than they would in Asda or Tesco. From Wednesday 17th August, in an industry first, customers will instantly receive a money-off Sainsbury’s Brand Match Coupon at the end of their transaction if the same basket of grocery branded goods would have been cheaper at either Tesco or Asda.

Using independent price data***, the advanced system instantly calculates the cost of a customer’s basket of branded grocery goods compared to the cost of the same branded basket at Asda and Tesco., even including any promotional deals they are running. If the branded grocery basket would have been cheaper elsewhere, shoppers will immediately receive a coupon – equal to the value of the difference between Sainsbury’s and either Asda or Tesco, depending on which is the cheapest. The coupon can be redeemed in store during their next shop.

Sainsbury’s Brand Match overview
•	Sainsbury’s is committed to ensuring customers don’t pay more for their branded grocery basket than they would at Tesco or Asda.
•	The new Sainsbury’s Brand Match scheme is the only price incentive that gives the difference back to the shopper instantly as a coupon if comparable branded grocery basket is cheaper at either Asda or Tesco on the same day: no ifs, no buts, no fuss.
•	Shoppers simply need to spend £20 or more and buy at least comparable one branded grocery item to benefit from Sainsbury’s Brand Match.
•	Shoppers can use multiple Sainsbury’s Brand Match coupons in a single transaction as long as the coupon values are different.
•	Grocery brands that are on special promotional deals in Asda and Tesco will be included in Sainsbury’s Brand Match providing the appropriate number of items are bought (e.g. to match against an Asda or Tesco buy one get one free offer you would need to have two of the same items in your basket at Sainsbury’s).
•	Coupons will be valid for 14 days from the issue date and can be redeemed in all Sainsbury’s stores in Northern Ireland.

Mike Coupe, Sainsbury’s Group Commercial Director, said: “Sainsbury’s Brand Match marks a huge step forward in the supermarket shopping experience and we’re delighted customers in Northern Ireland will be the first to trial it.

“We’ve always been committed to offering the best price on brands and by developing and installing innovative technology in our stores we can reassure every customer that they’re paying the same for their basket of branded grocery goods every time they shop with us. If your basket of branded grocery goods is cheaper at Tesco or Asda, Sainsbury’s Brand Match technology allows us to us to issue a coupon for the difference immediately.

“We want to give shoppers a no-hassle experience; we understand they don’t want to spend time constantly checking prices or logging onto a computer to print out a coupon at home. Quite simply, we’re doing the maths and the work so they don’t have to!”

Southern Area Hospice Services has launched this year’s ‘Win a Mini’ Car for one pound campaign in association with David Prentice Mini, Portadown, Autoline Insurance Group and Buttercrane Shopping Centre.
With tickets priced at only one pound the lucky winner will be driving off in a brand new Mini One fully insured for one year. This fantastic prize draw was launched Monday 1st August and tickets will be available in Buttercrane Shopping Centre through until Saturday 29th October. Tickets will also be on sale in Rushmere Shopping Centre, in The Mall in Armagh at different times throughout the campaign and in all Hospice shops.
Fiona Stephens, Corporate Fundraiser for Southern Area Hospice said, “The ‘Win a Mini’ Campaign has consistently been one of the best supported fundraising activities for the Hospice and we are delighted that it is running again in 2011. We truly appreciate the support of David Prentice Mini, Autoline Insurance Group, Buttercrane Shopping Centre, the other outlets who host the car and the many volunteers who sell tickets throughout the campaign. Over the years we have had winners from right across the counties covered by Southern Area Hospice and we look forward to seeing another lucky winner drive off in a fabulous, sporty new car complete with insurance for one year.
“All of the proceeds raised from the campaign go towards meeting the £2.2 million pound figure we need this year to continue to provide palliative care to patients in areas of county Down, Armagh and Tyrone.”
Last year’s winner David McMurray from Bessbrook in County Armagh said at the time of winning, “I am absolutely delighted to have won the car. I enter the draw every year and my whole family supports the Hospice. My sister-in-law is a volunteer with Southern Area Hospice and we have experienced the great work carried out there in support of so many local families. Even so, I couldn’t believe it when I got the phone call to say I had won.”
Further information about tickets is available by contacting Southern Area Hospice Fundraising office on 028 30251333.

The Quays Shopping Centre in Newry is today welcoming three new tenants with the announcement that high street giant H&M will be opening a store in the centre later this year. Debenhams at The Quays will be launching concession favourite Warehouse this month while fish foot spa sensation, AppyFeet, recently opened its doors at the Newry shopping centre.
To make way for the H&M store, which is due to open in the autumn, GameStop, will be moving across the mall beside Aldo. Local fashion retailer Miss Glam will also be opening for the autumn season. The new and relocated units will see the mall fully let. The new stores will create a number of jobs at the city centre site which already employs almost 2,000 people.
Cathal Austin, Centre Manager at The Quays said, “H&M is one of the few major retailers currently without a presence in Newry and we are delighted to welcome them to The Quays. This is only their third store outside of Belfast and is a major vote of confidence in The Quays and Newry’s burgeoning retail sector.
“It is important for our customers that we offer the best range of local and high street brands and we believe with these new stores and our existing retailers we have an offer to rival any available outside of Belfast or Dublin. We are also delighted that the new outlets will bring additional jobs to the centre helping to boost the local economy.”
The Quays has over 50 retail and commercial units at its Albert Basin site in the heart of Newry City Centre. Joint Letting Agents for The Quays are Savills and Tushingham Moore.

Autoline Insurance Group plan to launch a revolutionary pilot scheme which will seek to assist Northern Ireland drivers obtain insurance premiums which reflect how they actually drive.
The scheme is similar to a project which has been successfully running in the United States for a number of years and more recently has been tested in other parts of Europe and the UK. For the first time in Northern Ireland, drivers could have the opportunity to have their insurance premiums rated on their driving performance, rather than the current range of underwriting categories, such as gender and postcode.
Following a recent European Court of Justice ruling, from December 2012, gender will no longer be a consideration when assessing risk for insurance; therefore premiums for females are almost certain to increase. This will ultimately add to the already rapidly increasing cost of motor insurance in Northern Ireland.
Autoline Insurance Group has been working closely with a number of market leading experts to develop this exclusive scheme which they aim to launch during 2011.
Caroline Currie, Sales Director at Autoline Insurance Group said, “This new scheme will involve a data recorder being fitted in the car, which will assess how the car is being driven. The data recorder is capable of recognising and recording the driving habits of different drivers and can also pinpoint the location of the vehicle. This is an entirely voluntary type of insurance package which could have huge repercussions for the insurance industry. With this scheme, drivers will no longer have to endure the current broad brush approach to insurance rating, as premiums will be based on individual driving skills.”
This revolutionary device should not only assist in reducing insurance premiums for safer drivers, but can also assist drivers in improving their own driving abilities. Drivers who choose to install this device in their car will be able to go on-line to monitor their driving score and learn how to improve their own performance.
A recent document issued by the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland (Road Safety Division) highlighted the significant number of deaths and serious injuries on Northern Ireland’s roads involving young people. The Department’s aim is to reduce the number of young people killed or seriously injured in road collisions by at least 55% by 2020. Autoline believe that by helping to improve driving skills and performance, this device will potentially help to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on our roads.
Autoline are currently in consultation with local government departments to brief them on the potentially ground breaking impact the scheme could have for Northern Ireland drivers. They have also been negotiating with a number of insurers and are aiming to launch the scheme later in 2011.

Sainsbury’s Ballymena store at Braidwater Retail Park is set to receive a £5 million investment. The store, which in 1996 became the very first Sainsbury’s to open in Northern Ireland, will benefit from a new café, pizza bar, food to go counter as well as a new deli, bakery and meat and fish counters.
The work, which will be carried out by local firm McLaughlin & Harvey, will see a large increase in floor space with new non-food and TU clothing departments. The beers, wines and spirits department, which is currently situated on a different part of the site, will be moved in-store for ease of shopping for customers.
Bea Cox, Manager Sainsbury’s Ballymena said, “We are delighted that work has commenced on the new look store. The investment will mean that customers will enjoy a new and improved food offering as well as increased non food and clothing departments. We are aiming to minimise disruption to customers during this period and colleagues in store will be able to provide shoppers with information about the different stages of the refurbishment throughout the period.”
Emer Torney, Sainsbury’s retail lead for the project, added, “This is a substantial investment by Sainsbury’s in the Ballymena store which shows our continued commitment to provide customers in Northern Ireland with stores that are not only fantastic to shop in but also have a really wide range of food and non-food items. This is the second major investment in an existing store in the last 12 months with the Newry store enjoying a similar investment in 2010. There are plans for additional investment in Northern Ireland with three potential new stores currently in the planning process.
“We are working with a number of local contractors and our own team to ensure the Ballymena store can continue to trade for most of the period of the refurbishment. Work is scheduled to be completed early summer.”
Sainsbury’s currently has 12 stores in Northern Ireland and works with more than 100 local suppliers to source more than £250 million worth of products, £40 million of which is sold locally.

This is the challenge for social marketers based at the Northern Ireland Blood Transfusion Service (NIBTS). In these times of austerity, marketing is seen by some governments as a ‘cost’ rather than cost-saving strategy. Marketers normally sell benefits but in the case of the NIBTS the direct benefit is normally to an unknown person. “The 6% figure shows the reality of the situation and the challenge facing social marketers based at the NIBTS. Marketers, whether in the public or private sector, face similar challenges changing attitudes and behaviours. In that respect the experience of the NIBTS has a lot to teach us all” says Richard Houdmont, Director for Ireland, The Chartered Institute of Marketing. “With very limited resources they have to squeeze every last drop of blood from their marketing budget” he added, not apologising for the pun. “Some people think that social marketing and public-sector marketing is nothing to do with ‘the real world’ of business, but SMEs understand that in order to success they have to be creative and make their limited marketing budgets go far. Marketing is all about behaviour change and changing attitudes and so the NIBTS has a lot to teach us about marketing”.

With a budget of around £26m and a staff of over 220, NIBTS is part of a network of blood services in the UK and Ireland, with strong links to sister organisations throughout Europe, through the European Blood Alliance, and DOMAINE (an EU-funded programme).

Paul McElkerney, a Chartered Marketer, is the manager of the Donor Recruitment and Organisation department in NIBTS and at 6.00pm on 3 March The Chartered Institute of Marketing will be holding an event at the headquarters of the NIBTS at Belfast City Hospital when Paul will be revealing to fellow marketers the challenges, ‘what works’ and in the unpredictable world of human nature and changing behaviours and attitudes, what sometimes doesn’t work. He will dissect down further into the marketing channels NIBTS use to promote and performance measure the service. This will include KPIs such as complaints, satisfaction and another new measure relating staff inputs to successful donor recruitment and maintenance of the (customer) database. He will be joined by Charles Kinney who is the Donor Services General Manager at NIBTS, with primary responsibility for the donor programme, including blood collection staff (nursing, admin and transport), donor records and donor marketing. A key member of the senior management team, Charles is a Chartered Marketer and long-standing CIM member. Advance booking is required, see www.cim.co.uk/38380 for details or phone 01628 427340.

Newry Chamber of Trade and Commerce has welcomed the announcement today by Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster and Environment Minister Edwin Poots that a £38 million Business Park will be built adjacent to the Carnbane Business Park in the City. It comes as a result of 73 acres of land being acquired by Invest Northern Ireland.
The news comes as the business and retail community in Newry have been working together to discuss strategies going forward to assist the border city in continuing to buck the trend during the current economic downturn.
Conor Patterson President of Newry Chamber of Trade and Commerce said, “We welcome wholeheartedly this investment announcement. Newry is a very enterprising city strategically located on the North South economic corridor. Newry has always had an entrepreneurial spirit with some of Northern Ireland’s most successful companies originating in the city. This new business space will not only encourage inward investment and offer an attractive proposition for companies wishing to locate in Newry but it offers significant opportunities and growth potential for new and existing businesses already established in the city.
“We are very open for business in Newry despite the difficult trading conditions and we pride ourselves on being a region that works together for the greater economic good. This is reflected in the fact that many of our local businesses and retailers have been working together on a series of proposals for the forthcoming year to ensure we stay ahead of the competition in terms of product offering, value and sustainable business. We look forward to announcing these measures in the coming months as indeed we welcome the commencement of the construction phase of the new development at Carbane.”
Invest NI is finalising its plans for the park and it is anticipated that the first phase will be available for companies from early 2013.
